South Africans woke to the devastating news that local rap artist, Linda "ProKid" Mkhize, has died. According to a statement released by his family early on Thursday morning, the musician died following a severe seizure.

"The legendary SA hip-hop artist affectionately known as ProKid of hip-hop passed away on Wednesday. He suffered a severe seizure attack whilst visiting friends and paramedics were called in to assist. They did their best to revive him to no avail and called his time of death at 20.38," the statement read in part.

ProKid, who came to prominence on the hip-hop scene in the early 2000s, was regarded by many as one of the great influencers of the genre. With his honest and edgy lyrics, signature beats and artistic view, ProKid often brought the vibrant but brutal Sowetan township living to life.

Known best for his songs Abagcwali and Ghetto Science, ProKid teamed up with various big-name artists over the years including Proverb, AKA, JR, Slikour (from Skwatta Kamp fame), K.O. and Kaydo. His albums Heads and Tales, Snakes and Ladders and Dankie San reeled in multiple high-level awards, with the latter album later inspiring a community-driven fashion label.

Following the shocking news, many local celebrities and industry influencers shared their memories and tributes, describing him as a “humble trendsetter” and an artist who always aspired to excel at his craft.

ProKid leaves behind his parents, his wife Ayanda, his three-year-old daughter, his brothers and extended family.
