Dave Grohl to join Queens of the Stone Age on new album

in Latest

There was never any question that Dave Grohl was going to be a musician, from the moment when he fired his first guitar teacher and decided to teach himself at the age of 12. His rock and roll persona was firmly established when he became heavily dependent on marijuana while still at high school and spent most of his free time hanging out at local clubs watching punk bands. He somehow found the time to teach himself drums along the way and by the time Kurt Cobain saw him playing in Washington band Scream in 1990 and asked him to join his band Nirvana, his place in rock history was assured. Nevermind with its iconic single release `Smells like Teen Spirit` went on to become the anthem of a generation and is often quoted as being one of the best albums every made.

The death of Kurt Cobain brought Nirvana to a halt, but Dave Grohl joined forces with other musicians to form Foo Fighters. He also collaborated with a number of other musicians on a variety of projects including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and former Queen stalwarts, Brian May and Roger Taylor.

In 2002 Grohl joined Queens of the Stone Age on their third studio album, `Songs for the Deaf.` He replaced the band`s former drummer, Gene Trautmann and went on to tour with the band to promote the album. `Songs for the Deaf` met with instant critical acclaim, reaching the top twenty album charts throughout the United States and Europe and catapulting the band into the upper reaches of stardom.

Grohl left the Queens of the Stone Age tour in the latter part of the year, with his place being taken by Joey Castillo, former drummer with Danzig. Now Josh Homme, frontman of the band and long-time friend to Dave Grohl has told radio listeners that Joey Castillo has left the band, to be replaced by Grohl for the forthcoming album and tour.

Grohl and Homme have a long history of friendship and work together on a side project which is acknowledges as being one of the first examples of a supergroup. Featuring Josh Homme on vocals and guitar, Dave Grohl on drums and backing vocals and former Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones on a whole host of instruments including keyboards, bass guitar and mandarin, Them Crooked Vultures have rocked out one album in 2010 and performed at the prestigious Coachella Festival. Homme has spoken out about the friendship and understanding between himself and Grohl, referring to their "wonderful musical relationship" and calling it a "cool and comfortable position".

Queens of the Stone Age have released a number of messages on Facebook confirming Dave Grohl`s appearance on their latest album, along with a tantalising picture of the mixing desk featuring Grohl`s name as an addition alongside those of the other band members. Moreover the band have confirmed, as true, recent reports that they are set to make an appearance at next year`s Download Festival at Donington Park in June.

The as-yet untitled album is due for release sometime in the coming year, but in the meantime fans of Grohl can attempt to copy his meteoric rise to fame by teaching themselves how to play drums, keyboards or guitar with the help of instruments from Dawsons Music, run by musicians for musicians.
