Interview: Daisy Clark talks songwriting, lockdown and receiving praise from Billie Eilish

by Andrew Braithwaite

Singer-songwriter Daisy Clark has already wowed audiences with her breathtaking vocals, and garnered millions of views/streams between Youtube and Spotify. With receiving praise from the likes of Billie Eilish and being tipped as 'one to watch' by the BBC, we caught up with her to talk about her new single ‘Battle Scars’ and life as an artist.

Your latest song ‘Battle Scars’ has just been released. Written by yourself and featuring stunning raw vocals, what is the message behind this song?

Thank you! The song is about reassuring loved ones that you’ll always be there for them and you’ll stand by them no matter what. It was originally inspired by a relationship but has evolved into more of an uplifting and positive message especially at such an uncertain time.

I believe that you have picked up a superstar fan along the way with Billie Eilish giving you praise. How did this come about and what kind of feeling was it?

I was at a music event in London and got a random email really late at night from Glamour Magazine which I found very intriguing! I was then suddenly on a Skype call to a New York journalist and was watching Billie Eilish compare me to a Taco Bell burrito and ask me to sing her to sleep! SO surreal but an amazing feeling. I really look up to her so it was so crazy to know she loves my voice.

With everyone in lockdown recently, how have you been passing your time?

I have been writing a lot. With so much going on I have felt compelled to sit down with my guitar and write. I’ve also been very focused on the release of Battle Scars which has been an good way to distract me and use this time well! As much as I’m missing travelling and gigging, it has been a productive time for creating.

At only 22 years old and being tipped as 'one to watch' by BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2, this must give a great deal of encouragement. What are your plans as the lockdown eases?

My current plans are to keep going! Obviously I can't make solid plans as the future is uncertain at the moment, but i know I will continue to make and share music. When lockdown eases I would love to play more live shows and release more songs, as well as collaborate with other musicians!

How would you describe your general songwriting process?

At the moment I’ve been starting with a sentiment or a phrase, but it always changes. Sometimes I will sit down with my guitar and write from a chord sequence, but at the moment lyrical ideas have been inspiring me! For example a song I recently wrote that I shared on YouTube called ‘Stuck With You’ was inspired by the sentence ‘I’d rather be Stuck With You’. Battle Scars started with a piano chord sequence.

What would be your best gig or performance to date?

I absolutely loved playing The View stage at Boardmasters. I’ve played there twice, and both times were absolutely incredible. It’s a festival on my doorstep and always the one I aspired to play at having watched so many of my favourite artist there, so it’s very special to me!

Who are your main influences?

I started out with inspirations such as Taylor Swift and Gabrielle Aplin. I’m still very much inspired by both but also currently loving Julia Michaels, JP Saxe, Lennon Stella, The 1975 and The Beatles.

If you could choose one person to collaborate with, who would this be?

Probably Taylor Swift. She definitely inspired me from the get go with my music so that would be a DREAM. Young Daisy would fangirl a lot if she knew so got to collaborate with her, haha!

Have you got any specific festivals you want to play at?

I would LOVE to play at Glastonbury. It’s always been a festival I’ve aspired to play at. I’d also love to play Barn on The Farm as lots of artists I love have played there!

What genre would you best describe your music?

I’ve always struggled with this as I’ve always loved and played so many genres of music. But I would describe it as acoustic indie-pop vibes!

Have you got a message for your followers and fans?

A massive thank you for all the support and love you’ve shown me and my music! I love being able to create music and it’s amazing to have such a wonderful, supportive audience to share it with. I’m very grateful!

Thanks Daisy - all the best for the future!
