With four previous UK number ones, an impressive total of 67 weeks in the UK top 10 over their four decade career and over 100 million records sold worldwide, the Pet Shop Boys need little introduction.

Not only have they been a regular presence on the UK music scene, they have provided the soundtrack to a generation and are still attracting new fans from around the world. With this new record, Monkey Business, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are showing they are far from done in giving us the truly unique Pet Shop Boy sound, but at the same time giving a mix of genres that will catch the attention of a wider group of listeners.

What I want to hear in a song called Monkey Business is fun and you only have to look at the lyrics to see that there are plenty of hints to that. There is part of me that hopes there is truth to the lyrics, because I want to think of both the Pet Shop Boys jetting around the world and being the centre of attention at the parties they attend. With lines like ‘people tell me I'm a legend’ and ‘I start the party’ you get a sense of where they want this song to go and you’re not going to be disappointed. Musically, it matches the fun of the lyrics. Punchy synths introduce you to a groove steeped in 80s memories, but moving to a modern mix for the main body of the song which transcends genres and gives the Pet Shop Boys a new 2020 sound. The vocals are unmistakably the Pet Shop Boys, but with added female backing providing a good break from the norm and another layer of energy. A catchy synth backs the chorus, with subtle strings that give a really full sound and move the song to a really interesting place.

If you like the Pet Shop Boys, this song will not disappoint. Their distinctive vocal sound is present plus the added humour to the song will appeal. If you’re new to them, or even if who weren’t fans before you might just be turned on to Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s latest work, with a strong blend of dance, funk and pop, Monkey Business has all the ingredients to become another chart buster.
