Greek power metal band Firewind have unleashed their latest album upon us, a self-titled offering showcasing the band’s new evolution.

The first album to showcase their newest line-up is a worthy initiation, retaining their familiar sound but feeling fresh and renewed. The band officially farewelled keyboardist and guitarist Bob Katsionis and lead vocalist Henning Basse in March this year, making the announcement on their website. Fans were equal measures shocked and disappointed at first, but loyal support for the band has remained, with everyone eager to see what was coming next.

Stepping in to take the role of lead vocalist is Herbie Langhans, who you may remember from his work with German metal opera Supergroup Avantasia. His breathtaking voice is a very welcome addition to Firewind, pairing beautifully with their technically masterful music. The legendary guitarist Gus G, previously from Ozzy Osborne’s band has taken over Katsionis’ guitar responsibilities and also retained his own, proving that he really can do anything with an axe.

The band have dropped two singles so far from this new self-titled release, their ninth studio album to date. Both are tracks that will have you instantly hooked and longing for more. “Rising Fire” is a resoundingly positive anthem, with its motivating lyrics, incredible riffs and upbeat tempo having the effect of immediately lifting your mood. “Welcome to the Empire” has a gentler start, with Gus G’s masterful guitar skills the first thing to greet our ears. It’s almost hypnotic, hooking you right away, before descending into slashing, powerful chords that alert you this isn’t going to be an easy ride, but it’s sure going to be fun.

The rest of the album is an absolute treat from start to finish. Firewind make it clear with every track that they are embracing this new version of themselves and want us all to share in the joy that is a wonderful new beginning. The album being self-titled is so apt. Despite all the changes the guys have gone through over the years, they are still them. Still Firewind, and still blowing us away with their amazing music.
