Review: PinkPantheress - Heaven Knows

PinkPantheress has turned her unique top-line vocal abilities into the foundation for a discography that I predict will leave a long lasting mark in music history.

Fans that listened to her previous works will probably find that this album is trying new directions on some songs and staying in line with her previous sound on other songs.

PinkPantheress has been known to flawlessly blend her smooth, jittery, aggressive and robotic vocals with old school UK DnB, UK garage and breakbeats. She describes the sound from her previous album “To Hell With It” as “dark but dancey”. On the evolution of her sound PinkPantheress says this new album is meant to be listened to in the car with the top down, while her previous work was meant for a grungy bedroom. The album does not have a specific “message” and features lyrics on different themes. The song “Feel Complete” is about a fictional relationship with an alcoholic while “Ophelia” is about death.

When a bedroom indie artist breaks through, it is common for their sound to start getting diluted with every new project as new collaborators want a slice of the cake. That is why it is very important for the artist to recognize when someone wants to work with them just to profit from hype or because they have a genuine love, understanding and expertise in relation to the artistic journey that the artist is trying to take. A bedroom artist has all the control of their project and can directly channel their entire artistic vision into their material. PinkPantheress let in a lot of collaborators on this new album. This is why I am sometimes worried, but in this case happy to say that PinkPantheress has found a very nice middle ground between letting go of control of some aspects of her creative process and still staying true to her own artistic vision.

Features on this album include Ice Spice, Central Cee, Kelela and Rema. PinkPantheress is providing a space on this album for two of the most popular artists in both US and UK drill to exist in the same room. Beautiful!

On top of the featuring artists, there are so many amazing producers and writers who collaborated on this project. If you find a particular song that you enjoy, I strongly recommend you to look at the full credits and see who contributed.

I think a conservative old school PinkPantheress fan will be a little taken aback by the influence of mainstream pop and drill on this new album, providing a new bright and happy sound.

I am personally not fully sold on the new sound that is being reached for here, but I absolutely love hearing the development of an artist's sound from record to record. Each song on this record is masterfully written and produced!
