Fie Eike - Sad (review)

The Danish artist and composer, Fie Eike, has just released a new track titled “sad.” This solemn, beautiful piece emphasizes the importance of emotional sustainability in relationships with oneself and others. Fie’s smooth, soulful voice, adorned with intriguing vocal runs, blends seamlessly with the soft piano accompaniment. While her vocals may evoke shades of Lana Del Ray, Ellie Goulding, or perhaps Billie Eilish, searching for similarities among artists often overlooks Fie Eike’s truly unique vocal style. It deserves recognition in its own right, which, in my opinion, it possesses.

The track is inspired by nature, especially the North West Coast of Denmark. It speaks of the rawness and vulnerability in humans and their emotions. Even though the song sounds sad and might induce sadness in some people, the song itself is not meant to bring malicious sadness. Fie is a strong believer in the importance of embracing and expressing challenging emotions, not letting them fester in the dark. She believes that this is essential for personal growth and hopes the song can serve as a vessel for people to achieve just that. You can probably read into catharsis, which covers similar territory. Catharsis involves the theory that by feeling or expressing an emotion, that very same emotion can go away. Often associated with negative feelings or emotions. Kind of reminds me of the song Sad by Fie Eike.

I can’t think of a good place to play this song. I think every place would fit well. If you are in a certain mood, a song like Sad really works well. Let me explain it from my perspective. Time slows down. The sun is appearing and disappearing behind the clouds, leaving me with bursts of sun for 30 seconds and then dull grayness for the next 30. I can’t quite explain it, but it feels like the song is controlling the sunlight, or that they at least are working together. The piano and song makes for a very sparse soundscape, allowing sounds of chirping birds, snow falling from the roof and cars passing by on the street to also blend into the mix. I look at a little bird taking its first springtime bath, moving so jittery in the water and yes, it does make me sad, but I don’t know exactly why. It just works with the song.

Something that makes me very happy is that Fie Eike is set to release an album. Something that makes me very curious is to find out how that album is going to do. Me, being a big proponent and of course hoping it does very well. Something that would make me, and Fie even happier is if you went and listened to the song “Sad”. It might even make you happier.
