Described as having the “raw, poetic honesty found only in church-house confessionals or drunken back alleyways,” singer-songwriter and guitarist Chris Whitmer’s music is an authentic breed of Americana and outlaw folk. Hailing from Middleburg, Penn., Chris most recently had this unbridled sound, encapsulated by his song “Mighty Thin Line,” featured on WiFi PR Group’s indie mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 7. He also recently performed at Infringement Festival in Buffalo, N.Y.

While Chris primarily focuses on vocals and guitar, both acoustic and electric, he has also been known to bust out the banjo, keyboards, ukulele, mandolin and tambourine. He draws from a wide range of musical influences, from Neil Young, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones to artists he feels are “below the surface” and “put as much effort into their words as they do their music,” such as Marah, Wilco and Uncle Tupelo.

Lyrically, he’s inspired by a variety of events and concepts, including anything from a picture on the wall or discarded Christmas tree to a tattoo, wild dreams or simply an overactive imagination. Also, during a few months in the low point of his life, he spent that time reading the classics, studying music, journaling and rewriting all of his songs, of which he now has a couple hundred. He namely writes in a broad metaphorical sense to entice his listeners to think deeply about his music and lyrics.

As a result, Chris is most often compared to Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Paul Westerberg and Flint Zeigler, to name a few. Having touched audiences countrywide, Chris has been called “quite a cult figure among singer-songwriters” by Dave Blackledge of Pennsylvania Musician for his carefully and intelligently crafted songs.

One of Chris’ latest major accomplishments was his six performances over four days at Buffalo, N.Y.’s 10-day art, film and music festival, Infringement Festival, which was held July 24 to Aug. 3. These shows were mostly solo, but a couple were with his good friend and fellow musician, Eli The Hawk. Venues included Babeville, which is Ani DiFranco’s church, Essex St. Pub and Allen St. Hardware.

Chris Whitmer most recently had his single “Mighty Thin Line” featured on WiFi PR Group’s indie compilation, Indie Anthems Vol. 7. It’s a collection of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over. Released at Pitchfork Music Festival in July 2014 and again at Lollapalooza in August 2014, the 10-track digital mixtape was handed out on 3,500 download cards to festival attendees. WiFi PR has also made 1,500 more download copies available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

Though he has yet to release any official recordings, Chris Whitmer currently offers a list of songs that are exclusively available on his ReverbNation page. For every song purchased through ReverbNation, Chris donates half of the proceeds to Charity: Water, which is committed to providing clean, drinkable water to those in need, a cause that he wholeheartedly supports. He also occasionally hands out demos at his live performances.

Chris doesn’t have any upcoming live performances currently on the books, but he has performed throughout Central Penn., as far east as Cape May, N.J., and as far west as Portland, Or.
