Hip – hop band, The Black Eyed Peas rose 5 places to claim the UK number 1 in the singles chart. The band, who have in all probability reached the top spot because of their involvement in the talent contest, The X – Factor, leapfrogged favourite Willow Smith, to claim the coveted prize.

Will.i.am, the band’s front man, was involved in three stages of the show. At the judges house, he helped judge Cheryl Cole choose her finalists, two of which made the final, the whole band performed their single, “The Time (Dirty Bit)”, a few weeks ago, and in the live final, Will.i.am, performed a duet with Cher Lloyd. The last performance undoubtedly cementing the deal as far as number one spot was concerned.

Though the singles chart is not given much emphasis in the UK, the Christmas number one spot is a prize that many like to lay claim too. Over recent years it has been the X – Factor finalist who has won the prize. It is unlikely that a repeat of last year, where rock band Rage Against the Machine took the prize thanks to a social media campaign will repeat itself, as no one song is gaining momentum.

Matt Cardle, winner of the X – Factor, may well claim the prize.
