Love certainly takes a dark twist when these two connect. This week Ellie Goulding and Juice WRLD reveal the toxic elements of love, relationships, and breakups on their new song “Hate Me”.
Ellie Goulding kicks off the “Hate Me” strong with her piercing yet beautiful voice. Immediately she jumps into the chorus and reveals to us that this is not a typical happy teenage love song. Throughout the song, Ellie dives deep into her thoughts about her ex replacing her with a new woman now that he is in another relationship. Additionally, she reflects on how although he may show his new woman affection and claim to hate Ellie, it’s all lies. Her pessimistic perspective on her ex-lover and what seems to be an unhealthy breakup is revealed through her lyrics.
[Chorus: Ellie Goulding]
Hate me, hate me, still trying to replace me
Chase me, chase me, tell me how you hate me
Erase me, 'rase me, wish you never dated me
Lies, tell me lies, baby, tell me how you hate me
Juice WRLD definitely does not hide his emotions either. He also shares his feelings when it comes to an ex bashing his name after the end of a relationship. The artist takes his time on the second verse to discuss the pain, mind games, and trash talk that follows a messy breakup.
[Verse 2: Juice WRLD]
Hate me, hate me, tell me how you hate me
Tell me how I'm trash and you could easily replace me
Tell me that I'm strung out, wasted on the daily
Prolly 'cause there's no one around me numbin' all my pain
Prolly 'cause there's no umbrella to shield me from all the rain
Probably because you're the one playin' the mind games
You hate me because I don't let you play no mind games
They give me migraines and damage my brain
Other than the vivid lyrics from Ellie Goulding and Juice WRLD, the sound production on “Hate Me” emphasizes the darkness that surrounds the ill feelings of heartbreak.
