AJ Mitchell marks his first steps into mainstream music with his lead single ‘Slow Dance’, a cheery, infectious yet emotionally driven number that demonstrates Mitchell’s exceptional vocal ability in abundance just as easily as it proves why Ava Max is one of the most prominent pop stars on the rise.
AJ Mitchell’s pitch is kept light and soothing in the beginning, being able to flow through the words without the need of convoluted instrumentation but throughout the song, the listeners can also get a taste of the delicate notes that he strikes with equal parts poise, power and passion.
For an eighteen-year-old who commenced his career on YouTube, serenading his fans with impeccable covers of the most popular hits in contemporary music, he still manages to impart a fresh jolt of vulnerability into his sound. Supported by an incredibly joyful arrangement of percussion, Mitchell croons about wanting a slow dance with his lover, his tone steeped in some loveable desperation and a whole lot of teenage nerves that Mitchell is all too familiar with. What is more stunning is Ava Max’s work on the track; she has already impressed audiences worldwide with her electrifying style, showcased best in singles ‘Sweet but Psycho’ and ‘So Am I’, and she is up yet again for lending her vocals in the most dynamic way possible. Despite a slow beat, Max ensures that she embraces those high notes and keeps up with the backup runs that she has mastered over her career.
It is a tender-hearted love song that plays off the vocal chemistry the two singers have in riches but then Mitchell powers the bridge with a tremendous riff that runs through the high notes with ease. This may just be his debut album but AJ Mitchell has already gone through his steps to success.
