Dreamers’ Get Political in ‘Desentisize’, An Angsty Cutting Anthem

Dreamers’ latest song ‘Desentisize’ is a searing contemplation on what it means to live in modern society, and the accompanying music video hits the nail on why exactly the fears of a dystopian future may be more justified than anyone had ever expected.

The track is angsty, satiric and clever; it is a cutting indictment of how the population is mired in a web of consumerism, violence, and abuse, and have largely become ‘desensitized’ to the horrors before their very eyes. Right from the get-go, the track opens with the very alarming sounds of firearms being readied, guns being cocked, before the electric guitar takes over, filling the gaps with its boisterous sound, bringing a bite to the themes of the song. Lead singer Nick Wold’s delivery is aching, self-aware and steeped in irony; a sort of outward political commentary that many musicians do not attempt to invoke anymore.

The video depicts the band members sporting masks, mindlessly going through the motions of contemporary life: taking selfies, obsessing over screens, distracting themselves with materialistic possessions as the band jam out to this deliciously punk-rock in their technicolor basement. The lyrics are powerful and evocative of the social climate the band is critiquing; they are referring to how everyone ‘close[s] their eyes’ in the face of these circumstances and just naturally become desensitized.

Dreamers have been active for over five years now, with their first EP having come out in 2014 to moderate success. Since then, they have toured through the States, playing with established bands such as Weezer, All Time Low, Young Rising Songs among other rock bands. They have had a fairly busy 2019, with a few singles released in the first part of the year. On this particular song, Wold says:

The song is about all the crazy and horrible things in the world that we somehow get used to and even forget about. Lying, thieving political leaders, rape, war, and violence, advertisers constantly selling to us, preying on our vanity and worst instincts. In this song, I’m not always singing as me but as a corporate moneyed interest who wants nothing more than for you to acclimate, to not notice, to desensitize"
