Taylor Janzen channels her punk-rock angst in her new single ‘What I Do’, a bold, bass-fuelled romp of raw emotions and tender expressions.

Reminiscent of the vulnerabilities of the early aughts’ that pop-rock female artists like Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani captured through their varied discography, this young singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Canada embarks on her own adventure of heartbreaks and personal growth in this new track. The earnestness of the acoustic guitar opening out the body of the song immediately hooks the listener in, enchanting them with its familiarity and down-to-earth alt-rock flavor. Janzen shines in her lyrical progression, using the inflections in her voice to convey the drowsiness brought on by the break-up. 

The chorus is the refrain ‘What I Do’, looping through the runtime, almost as an incantation to solidify the morals of the song. Janzen’s vocals flow smooth and silky, matching perfectly with the sharpness of the guitar chords. Speaking on the origin of the song, Janzen says, “’ What I Do…’ is a song I wrote about being in a serious relationship and suddenly realizing that your issues are affecting someone else for the first time, and not entirely knowing how to change that. Musically, it’s a bit of a departure for me. I wrote it on an acoustic guitar in my bedroom, but when we got around to producing it, it seemed to take on a life of it’s own." says Janzen..” The production of the track is memorable in that it is simple but powerful; bursting with feeling and sass.
