Naked Six’s “‘Song of the City” is a roaring, boisterous number, steeped in the maddening, head-banging oomph of the classic rock genre.

Although the runtime is rather short at just a little over two minutes, the band ensures that every second is a second well worth spent, as the listener can drown themselves in the hard rock fantasies of electric guitars, drum machines, and electrifying vocals. The song is off their latest album Lost Art of Conversation, which is set to release next year on March 20. The track is a smashing combination of everything the modern rock genre lacks in its stylings: rebellious angst fuelled by emotive, rambunctious instrumentation, and a focus on the playful intent of the rock genre.

They had initially begun as a duo, composed of members Seb Byford and Tom Witts but have recently added a third member-- Callum Witts, who plays bass for them. Seb Byford’s vocal performance is a crackling delight, providing the song with some catchy hooks. The second half of the song exclusively zeroes in on the solos, and that’s when the groove starts to set in. It pays homage to the hits spawned by the Rolling Stones to AC/DC to more recent acts such as the Arctic Monkeys. It is a tune that is not dwelling over meanings or lyrics but the foundational magic of rock music that is vividly incorporated throughout.

Speaking on their influences of rock music, they say, “I guess there was more of a fire in the air back then, it hadn’t been done before so bands started playing this new sound, it really blew up and just created this massive rock/metal scene. The 70’s and 80’s were brilliant for record sales as well, we love the concept of hearing of a band you like and running down to the nearest record store, buying the album to then run back home in excitement and give it a spin.” The manner in which rock music is enjoyed nowadays certainly may have changed but no doubt bands like Naked Six have their own set of devoted fans, giving it their all for the rock ‘n’ roll genre.
