Alec Benjamin explores the challenges of the mind in his latest single ‘Mind is A Prison’, a fast-paced, daunting composition that gives the listeners a taste of what is to be expected from the singer’s upcoming album.
Although the details of the album have not been disclosed publicly, fans will be waiting eagerly to see what else does the former Youtube has under his sleeve. He has already built a following off his social media presence, particularly the ‘Can I Sign For You’ series in which he performs his songs to people in the public. Yet this song veers from that outgoing, pleasant persona and digs into the mental inferences that tend to plague quite a few people.
Benjamin showcases the depth in his lyrical work here, weaving through his words a story of how he feels trapped inside his own head. Admitting to being “stuck in [his] head”, Benjamin does not let the subject matter of the song bring down its intensity. It could sound mournful and slow yet the steady rhythm of the acoustic guitar and his rap-like verses help the tune maintain balance on the edge. Moreover, as a millennial musician from California, he is all too familiar with the mental obstacles faced by millennials, and he incorporates this youth lethargy into the breakout notes in the chorus. As a result, this song is the perfect concoction of pop beats and rock angst; Benjamin’s voice is smooth while the instrumentation is engaging and powerful.
Benjamin has provided information about the emotional process that guided him into writing this song. He says, “This song is just about how I overthink everything. Especially all this new music and all these new decisions that I've had to make. I think a lot and sometimes I feel like I'm stuck inside my head. People are like, "don't overthink it, just go with it," but sometimes I feel like I don't have the option to get out! So that's what the song is about — feeling like you're trapped inside your own mind. You can be your own worst enemy.” Seeing how this track is becoming a sleeper hit through the country, Benjamin will certainly have quite to live up to in his album.
