Matt Lucas Releases ‘Baked Potato Song’ Supporting NHS Workers

This might sound like a strange song to review, but if this gets any extra publicity for the ‘Baked Potato Song’, then good.
Most people in the UK know Matt Lucas from either Shooting Stars in the 90s or more recently Little Britain, but he is an all-round superstar with musical theatre being one of the many skills he can add to his resume. However, the most important one is he is clearly a ‘good egg’. He has re-written a 20 year old comedy song to support the NHS effort to beating Coronavirus. The reason this song is so important is it will support a charity to get food from restaurants that are closed to hospitals to help the effort.
The song itself is a fun song, as you would expect, but we mustn’t forget that Matt Lucas can really hold a tune. You can hear in his voice that he has spent a lot of time in musical theatre. He claims that the only creative thing he has done in the last two weeks is to rewrite the lyrics to this song, which first made an appearance 20 years ago on Shooting Stars. The lyrics are set there to remind us to ‘keep your distance, keep some space’ in a melody that is wonderfully fun, upbeat and very memorable.
As soon as you hear Matt Lucas you smile, you hear the talent he has for voices, but you feel that this song is far more than the man himself, it is about supporting people on the front line who are doing so much for so little and making a difference to all of us, and, by supporting this song we are doing a small bit to say thankyou.
