Charli XCX’s ‘Forever’ is a wonderful cacophony of madness and desire. The British singer-songwriter harks back to the house era to pen a tune about infatuation and passion for the modern era.
Charli has truly made a name for herself in recent years as an artist who isn’t afraid to mishmash a range of genres and styles to enrichen her own sound. As a result, her songs have been unique, enchanting and endlessly infectious, and fans have fallen hard for her star persona. With a little bit of brashness, a whole lot of mischievousness, and a sense of self coming through in spades, her work has been enticing, irresistible and versatile.
This song, in particular, pays homage to the house and techno styles that the likes of Daft Punk and other classic electronic maestros have made popular. The song begins with a jarring mess of sounds, the kind that would resemble a devastating car crash. From then, it evolves into a soft-tuned, intimate, and melodic composition that gives Charli enough space to both explore her emotions and play around with an array of intriguing forms. We all know that Charli can bring the vocal tour-de-force whenever she feels like it but she chooses to enlist autotune to exemplify the tech-infused futuristic style of the song. The subtle, catchy synth chords chiming in the background grounds Charli’s harmony, especially as she ventures into what can only be described as a wholehearted, unabashed declaration of love.
Every artist at least has a tremendous love song but few are able to arrange them in such an unorthodox, memorable fashion. When you’ve got at your disposal some swift technology that will let you adapt, recreate and blend any sort of instrumentation you could possibly think of, there is no need to stick with the ordinary. Charli does just that, and her track flourishes as a result. Even her vocal echoes that reflect and bounce around through the verses add to this aura that’s both futuristic and nostalgic at the same time. But despite the commotion around the techno flavours, we can’t forget that there is an actual melody that’s as impassioned and familiar as any other pop song. Kudos to Charli, who continues to expand her capabilities with each and every effort.
