Asking Alexandria have done it again; releasing a stellar album that is almost certain to cause controversy and divide opinions.
The British expats, now living in the USA, have long defined themselves as a rock band, despite some insisting on still calling them metalcore. Their new release, “Like A House On Fire,” should put that debate to bed in case their 2017 self-titled album wasn’t clear enough. Neither of these are metal albums. There’s no screams, no breakdowns and no regression. In place of these things are magic riffs and toe-tapping, swinging rhythms. This is rock at its finest.
“Like a House On Fire” is Asking Alexandria’s sixth studio album and their second since the triumphant return of original lead vocalist Danny Worsnop. Worsnop, along with guitarists Ben Bruce and Cameron Liddell, bassist Sam Bettley and drummer James Cassells have done some of their best work yet with this one. It breaks the rules, storms in multiple directions and is assured to have people cheering happily and seething with rage in equal measure. But this is the norm for the quintet. They have never been afraid of being criticised as long as it means they are staying true to themselves and their musical vision.
Being yourself without apology and regardless of what others think or want is one of the biggest themes on this album. Some other key messages that ring through are focusing on the present, viewing past mistakes as lessons, looking to the future, and recognising what makes you truly happy.
Asking Alexandria have always told the truth in their song writing and they’ve really outdone themselves there. They hold nothing back, opening up about drug addictions, regrets and fears. As a bonus we also get some commentary on their very clear views around the seemingly endless tirade of panic propaganda in the media and the ways humans are constantly being divided.
Every track is filled with loud, motivating anthems that are entirely unapologetic in their messages. There is such brutal honesty in the lyrics, it is impossible not to feel yourself resonating with these songs. The entire album is also brimming with positivity and hope, fuelled by deep, personal reflections. “Like A House On Fire” manages to have the feel of an instant, great classic rock album from the very first time you listen to it, while maintaining that sense of being entirely fresh and new. Asking Alexandria has given us all a real treat with this one. Do yourself a favour and check it out.
