Blacktop Mojo Release 4-Track EP, “Static”

Texas rockers Blacktop Mojo have graced fans with their latest offering, a stunning four-track EP entitled “Static.”
Even though we’ve all been hoping for another full-length album since 2019’s “Under the Sun,” we have not had to wait too long for this one. And despite being only four songs long, there is so much energy and collective genius here, it feels much bigger.
Formed in 2012, Blacktop Mojo have released three studio albums to date, with each being hugely impressive pieces of work. This EP is the second release with the band’s current line-up of founding members Matt James (vocals) and Nathan Gills (drums), and Matt Curtis (bass), Ryan Kiefer (guitar) and Chuck Wepfer (guitar).
One of the most striking things about Blacktop Mojo is their flawless co-operation and that sense of true comradery in their playing. A likely reason for this was the band’s unconventional decision to move into a house together in 2017, where they continue to reside today. You can hear this unity in their music. You can feel the sense of teamwork and every single member doing their part for the overall good of the work.
This level of technical mastery and fluid co-operation among a band is rare to see, but the result of this genuine symbiosis creates such harmonious and brilliant tracks. Their overall sound is a delicious blend of grunge and rock, seeming to have found that perfect balance between the two genres to create something fresh and unique. The minor key is strong with these guys, and the guitars are reminiscent of an old-school rock and blues sound with a healthy dose of shredding.
Blacktop Mojo have really spoiled us with this EP, and we should be incredibly grateful. It was only September last year when they gave us “Under the Sun,” and now they have surprised us all with this wonderful new release. “Static” really is something special, and you owe it to yourself to give it a listen.
