100 million career streams is a remarkable achievement for an artist - especially for one whose rise has been based on organic and largely independent growth, fuelled largely by exemplary songwriting and affecting emotions. That’s what Nick Wilson has accomplished, and it’s all come long before the release of his debut album ‘Now I’m Falling’, which is set to be released on August 6th via Never Fade Records.
Nick launched the album with the single ‘Lead Me To The Water’, he also recently soundtracked ‘Made in Chelsea’ with his lovelorn ballad ‘Enough To Know You’ and picked up fresh airplay on BBC Introducing. Now he takes another big step towards his debut album by sharing the new single ‘Say Something’. Listen HERE. Watch the lyric video HERE.
‘Say Something’ demonstrates that there’s a whole other side to Nick outside of his masterly command of uniting heartful lyricism and intimate productions. Set to a languid loop of elastic bass and raw beats, his natural falsetto tops a groove that leans towards energising alt-pop. Despite an exciting variation on his sound, the emotional impact of his words remains true to his deeply personal songwriting style.
“‘Say Something’ is about the frustration of not knowing what the other person is thinking or feeling in a relationship,” says Nick. “It’s so easy to make a situation worse just by not talking about it, and in a relationship this feels like even more of a punch to the face. It’s about those moments when you know something is wrong, but you can’t understand it because you don’t know what that something is.”
Like the majority of the ‘Now I’m Falling’ album, ‘Say Something’ was produced by Martin Luke Brown (BTS, Gavin James, Sody) and Mark Elliott. They help to elevate Nick’s gorgeous, gilded songwriting to make it stand tall next to Bon Iver, Ben Howard or Phoebe Bridgers. It’s a set that tackles love and loss, regret and renewal with a cohesiveness that makes it feel like a snapshot of a year in his life.
‘Say Something’ also shows that Nick’s steady cultivation of his talents and his following has been well judged. He first started to hit big numbers with his self-released EP ‘Closer’ in 2015. But rather than rush an album out, he instead built a compelling catalogue of songs before making bigger waves after signing to Never Fade Records in 2019.
Nick will follow the release of the album by touring with Emily Burns. He’ll then start 2022 with another major tour, this time with Gabrielle Aplin.
