Katie Welch, LA-based American Pop-Soul singer & songwriter, is about to drop her sensual, vulnerable and powerful debut EP The New Renaissance on November 20, 2020, the latest and most highly anticipated project from this blossoming talent.
Her powerful presence and soulful voice is influenced by the greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse and Celine Dion, but sprinkled with nuances of classic pop and R&B inspired by The Jacksons, Prince, Cher, Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera.
The New Renaissance is a culminating expression of all the styles that have inspired Katie over the years, making her into the artist that she is today. This EP takes you on a musical journey colored with the experiences of love, lust, addiction, loss, and personal growth. Each song represents a different layer of her life and personality. Her ethereal voice and raw lyrical storytelling is deeply personal but at the same time universal, we can all relate to the emotions you feel listening to her music. “It never felt honest for me to lock myself into one specific genre or to label myself in any finite way, I’m an Aquarius, I love my freedom” says Katie, “I also love to try new things and experiment and explore all kinds of sounds and styles. I take the same approach with my fashion choices as well, I’m extremely eclectic. I truly believe the whole world is on the verge of a great new era of art, culture, philosophy and enlightenment and I can’t wait to watch it all unfold and to be a part of it.” The lead single for the project “Elevation” is reminiscent of a 90’s Janet Jackson groove, with a feel good bass that you can’t help but move along to. “We are all just matter + vibration & frequency, this song is about that visceral feeling you get when you meet someone on your frequency and how it just raises your vibration. I believe your vibe attracted your tribe and I wanted to be able to express that in a way that makes everyone feel good and wanna groove” explains Katie. Growing up a dancer Katie doesn’t just hear music she feels it, and you feel that when you listen to her music. Track 2 on the EP is her previously released single “Sober” already topping 6 figure streams on Spotify since its release in September. "Sober is about addiction, but not just of substances,” says Katie. “It’s also about how we allow other people to consume us; how we use our vices to supplement our longing. Toxic substances fill the hole of toxic relationships. By learning to love ourselves we can fill those holes; and to be ‘sober’ is to be whole.” Track 3 titled “You Like It” is everything you want from a sensual R&B record, dreamy melodies dripping in sexual tension and desire. Track 4 is another previously released single “Beg 4 It” keeping it sexy with a bit more pop sensibility, the chorus hits hard in this banger and the vocals deliver all the empowered female energy we want right now. “Women have come so far in the past few years in terms of taking our power back, making our voices heard, taking our rightful seat at the table and showing the world that we are incredibly powerful beings who have a lot to say and our bodies are ours to make decisions about. This song is about owning your sexuality and anyone who wants a piece they gotta beg for it”. The final track on the EP entitled “Tired” is an emotional power ballad about standing up for yourself and overcoming your demons. “I actually wrote this song to myself as if I was looking in the mirror calling myself out, I am absolutely my own worst critic and I have held myself back so many times from going after what I want, I wrote this song from the perspective of my inner child facing my grown up demons” Katie explains.
A true artist and storyteller, and a multifaceted entertainer Katie has so much to share with the world and lucky for all of us, she is just getting started. Aside from creating music and breathtaking visuals to go along with her music, this songbird keeps herself endlessly busy. She collects and curates vintage for her vintage clothing line @eclectic_lady_vintage. “I have always loved playing dress up, my grandmother is who go the hooked on fashion at an early age. To me fashion is one of the most effective forms of self expression, and we already have so many beautiful things on this earth. It truly brings me joy when I can keep something out of a landfill and give it new life.” The most recent endeavor that has been keeping Katie busy has been the creation of her Children’s empowerment program C.A.P.E. Nation that operates under the anti-bullying organization Boo2Bullying. My hope is to prevent bullying before it happens by giving kids simple tangible tools to empower themselves and teach them to be kind and compassionate to others. The motto of C.A.P.E. Nation is “This is our world to save, to change, to make a better place, and it starts with you.” Powerful words from a powerful artist taking her message to the global stage. We have so much to enjoy and even more to look forward to according to Katie, part 2 of The New Renaissance is already underway so we can expect even more from her in the first quarter of 2020.
