ACM New Male Artist of the Year Nate Smith and international pop-punk icon Avril Lavigne have teamed up once again for their emotional new track, “Can You Die From A Broken Heart.” Written by Kevin Fisher, Michael Matosic, and Tom Walker, and produced by Lindsay Rimes, the power ballad marks a reunion of the two artists after their electrifying performance of “Bulletproof” at the 2024 ACM Awards. The song is now available and featured on Apple Music’s New Music Daily.
The track will be part of Smith’s upcoming sophomore album, California Gold, set to release on Friday, October 4th. This follows Lavigne’s sold-out North American Greatest Hits Tour and the release of her first-ever Greatest Hits album, which celebrates her career-defining hits.
“Getting the chance to work with one of your all-time favorite singers twice is humbling and such a pinch-me moment,” said Smith. “Avril is an absolute powerhouse of a vocalist and a wonderful person. ‘Can You Die From A Broken Heart’ is everything a heartbreak ballad should be, and I think this song will touch hearts in a deep and meaningful way.”
Lavigne echoed Smith’s enthusiasm, sharing, “I’ve always been a fan of country music, and I admire Nate’s work as an artist. After performing ‘Bulletproof’ together, I knew I wanted to do more with him. ‘Can You Die From A Broken Heart’ is an intense ballad that will resonate deeply with listeners.”
In addition to “Can You Die From A Broken Heart,” California Gold will include 16 tracks, featuring previously released songs like “Fix What You Didn’t Break” and “Wish I Never Felt.” The album will also feature collaborations with artists like Alesso on “I Like It,” which has already amassed over 120 million global streams and reached the Top 10 on Dance radio. Smith’s chart-topping single “Bulletproof” will also make an appearance, following his record-breaking success with three consecutive multi-week No. 1 hits on the Mediabase and Billboard charts.
In celebration of his new album, Smith will appear on Amazon Music’s City Sessions series on October 3 at 6 p.m. PT, performing live in Los Angeles. He is also currently on his 2024 Through The Smoke headline fall tour, which kicked off on September 19 in Portland, OR, and will wrap up in Nashville, TN, on December 5.
In addition to his album release, Smith has been announced as a main artist for the C2C 2025 Festival in London.
