New Technology Turns Twerking Into Music
No matter how much of a hardened connoisseur of music you are, it’s difficult to ignore that trends come along and have an impact on the industry, whether it be a small ripple in the pool something more enduring.
At the moment, the whole concept of twerking is extremely prominent in pop culture with Miley Cyrus bringing it to the forefront of our minds so that it has become more than just a dance move that one artist attempts to pull off. Brave any nightclub on a Saturday night and you will see plenty of people who think that they can also manage it. The move has become ingrained in our minds.
This has been taken to the next level and Danish headphone manufacturers AiAiAi have bought together a crack team (excuse the pun) to create music “by the booty, for the booty.” In short, this company has found a way to track the movement of your bottom as you shake it and turn this into music.
Avoiding any more puns about hitting bum notes, the technology behind it is actually very clever. To make the project a reality, AiAiAi reached out to Omnipresent World of Wizkids, an innovative company who hooked the dancer up to an open-sourced sensor board and some accelerometers.
The dancer they were tracking wasn’t just any dancer. The services of self professed Twerk Queen Louise were enlisted and she was hooked up to their equipment so her movement could be tracked. The movements were then interpreted by prolific Portuguese producer Branko who is famous for his musical style which is rooted deeply in dance and club music.
The result is actually surprisingly good. Twerk Queen Louise can show off her best moves and hear the resulting music in real time. It doesn’t even sound as bad as you would expect music created by someone’s rear to sound and a link to the result of one of Louise’s dancing sessions can been heard below. Of course, the final product has been polished by Branko but it’s still fascinating to see how the most basic of moves can be translated into music.
Creating music from movement is certainly nothing new but this fun and modern twist brings the whole concept right up to date.
