Olly Murs and Caroline Flack Confirmed for the X Factor
It was finally officially confirmed earlier this week that Olly Murs and Caroline Flack will be replacing Dermot O’Leary as hosts of the X Factor for the upcoming new series.
Few people were surprised by the news which was one of the worst kept secrets in showbiz in recent years but the question now is whether the duo will help to breathe new life into the flagging show.
The show’s boss Simon Cowell has made no effort to contain his excitement over luring the pair to the show, saying: "When they were on Xtra together, they were a brilliant double act. Since then, Caroline's gone from strength to strength – and Olly has become one of Britain's biggest stars. So now I'm looking forward to them fronting the main show."
The pair were certainly popular when they presented the aforementioned show and helped to raise its popularity somewhat despite its status as a spin-off show. They bought a genuine chemistry and humour to the show that other presenters haven’t really been able to pull off with any degree of success. This being said, do they have what it takes to be able to support the much more serious main series and later on, the live shows?
Dermot has already graciously tweeted his support to the pair saying: "Huge congrats to @ollyofficial and @carolineflack1 be gentle with the old girl... that's the show, not Louis."
O’Leary himself was the main face of the show for many years and his image is going to be a difficult one to wipe off the format. That’s not to say that he was necessarily always a popular presenter for the show, rather that he is familiar, like that old bra that has seen better days but you don’t have the heart to throw out because it’s just so comfy.
There is likely to be some initial resistance from hardcore fans of the show but at the end of the day, its target audience is a young one and without sounding ageist, Dermot was getting on a bit.
An injection of youth that Murs and Flack will provide could be just what the doctor ordered to make the X Factor relevant once again. Murs himself is doing well with his music career at the moment and that gives the show some much needed credibility. He is one of the show’s success stories and his mere presence screams that the show is worth doing to a public who seems to have become extremely disillusioned towards it.
