S Club Cash in on the Good Old Days

The last few years have seen a resurgence of bands from the 90s and 2000s reuniting. Whether that be because of a genuine need for nostalgia in the market, or just because the pop stars of our youth are struggling to pay the mortgages on their fancy homes, we are still being bombarded.

This week, 90s favourites S Club 7 announced that they will be releasing a new version of their greatest hits album and it will include a previously unreleased track “Rain”.

The re-release is in support of their upcoming Bring it all Back tour which is due to kick off next week in Birmingham which is great news for fans but I can’t help but think that this latest move is that of people who are desperate to relive their glory days.

Best: The Greatest Hits of S Club 7 was originally released in 2003 with 15 tracks from the group’s back catalogue including some material that was created especially for the record. The re-release will be almost identical except for the new track which I can’t help but think is their way of trying to bleed everything they can out of their short-lived fame.

It’s great for fans that they will have the chance to be able to see the group again and a tour is a great way of doing that but encouraging fans to buy an album that is just one song different to one they probably already own is insulting. It shows a blatant disregard for the fans that got them to where they were at the peak of their fame.

No doubt people who have followed the group from their humble roots in their shows on CBBC right through to when they became a regular feature on the charts will want to own this brand new song and support S Club with their purchase but more casual fans will not waste their money, or will wait until the album hits the bargain bins.

If people really want to get this new track and aren’t prepared to pay for the album then music bosses are just encouraging piracy and that is how the release is likely to blow up in their faces.
