British Phonographic Industry figures show increase in streaming
New figures from the British Phonographic Industry have revealed that streaming is quickly becoming the primary source of music for the British public.
Streaming is up by 80% so far this year. Putting that into perspective, in 2014 some 14.8 billion tracks were streamed and in contrast, 11.5 billion tracks have been streamed with half of the year left to go. That means that last year’s figure is without a doubt going to be smashed.
This increase has been helped along by the huge popularity of Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk which has amassed an impressive 45 million plays over streaming services.
What’s interesting about the rise in streaming is that it has come hand in hand with a slow in the decline of physical CD sales. This is due to a resurgence in the popularity of the compilation album which has seen albums such as Now 90 enjoy huge physical sales.
All of this adds up to great news for the music industry which has taken the rise in a new technology in streaming and used it to move forward with the times.
It also means that more people are now paying to access their music with fewer people taking the route of illegal downloading. This can only be good news for the industry.
