Spotify Consider Letting Certain Artists put Material on Paid For Tier Only
Spotify could reportedly be considering letting some artists release their music through a paid-for platform only.
The streaming service has famously come to blows with Taylor Swift in the past over the way they compensate artists for making their music available to stream but they have always rigidly defended their model.
This change in heart comes after Adele decided to pull her latest album 25 from Spotify, following n the footsteps of Swift. This came as a big blow for Spotify as the record is one of the biggest and most eagerly anticipated of the year.
Now, Spotify has talked about making certain artist’s material available on a paid-for tier only but they have also claimed that they are completely dedicated to their model.
"We are 100% committed to our model because we believe that a free, ad-supported tier combined with a more robust premium tier is the best way to deliver music to fans, create value for artists and songwriters, and grow the industry," a spokesperson for Spotify said.
Coldplay will be releasing their latest album A Head Full of Dreams through Spotify on Friday after initially postponing.
"We explored a wide range of promotional options for the new Coldplay album and ultimately decided, together with management, that Coldplay and its fans would best be served with the full album on both free and premium this Friday,” the spokesperson continued.
With high profile artists such as Taylor Swift and Adele releasing some of the most anticipated material of the year but snubbing Spotify, they are bound to suffer. This could lead to Spotify getting into trouble, especially if some of the most popular new releases aren’t going to be made available.
