HMV reports sales of vinyl turntables up over Christmas

High Street entertainment retailer HMV revealed that they sold a turntable a minute in the run up to Christmas – showing that the vinyl revival is showing no signs of slowing down.

It was announced last year that sales has hit 1.3 million for the first time since 1995 and in the week leading up to Christmas, HMV reported a further surge in sales.

HMV's chief executive Ian Topping said: "Entertainment products form a major part of the Christmas shopping list.

"The gift of the year in 2015, though, has to be a turntable, as we see a huge resurgence in the sales of vinyl."
HMV are not the only retailers to have seen an increase with John Lewis and Amazon also reporting huge sales and the latter naming turntables their biggest selling audio product over the festive period.

It has also been reported that sales of vinyl increased by 52% year-on-year to $222 million in 2015 - $60 million more than ad-supported streaming services.

The popularity seems to echo a wider nod to the nostalgic and it’s interesting that vinyl seems to be doing better than streaming which is the new kid on the block.

Tesco has even started selling vinyl records again which shows that the resurgence in vinyl is gaining even wider spread popularity.
