MPs Back an English National Anthem
MPs had a landmark debate in Parliament yesterday, making the decision that England will be adopting its own national anthem.
God Save the Queen will remain the anthem of the UK as a whole but now suggestions are pouring in as to what song England should adopt.
Scotland already have Flower of Scotland and Wales have Land of my Fathers, both of which are played before either side plays sports internationally but Twitter has had some opinions as to what song England should adopt.
Some of the more amusing suggestions have so far included Vinadloo, Spice Up Your Life and the theme from Grandstand.
The issue as to what song England should claim will be debated in Parliament on March 4th but the idea of holding an X Factor style vote has been thrown around.
Toby Perkins, the MP who first opened the debate said of the fact that England sing the UK national anthem before their games: "It reflects a sense that we see Britain and England as synonymous," he said.
"This not only denies us English an opportunity to celebrate the nation that is being represented but is also a cause for resentment amongst other countries within the British Isles who feel that England have requisitioned a British song."
