The 90s Are Back With New Skunk Anansie Live Album ‘25LIVE@25’

by Liz J

The 90s were glorious. It was a time of rebellion and outright madness, where limits were pushed and normal was thrown out the window entirely. It was loud and energetic and a little bit rough around the edges, but it gave society some of the most iconic artists of modern time. Skunk Anansie is one of them.

Now, the band is bringing the 90s back with the release of their career-spanning live album 25LIVE@25. Paying tribute to 25 years of music that still remain relevant today, Skunk Anansie’s live album will be released on 25 January 2019.

25LIVE@25 will feature songs that have made the band the iconic group it is today, featuring live performances of Intellectualise My Blackness, God Only Loves You, Charity and what’s probably regarded as their most popular song – Weak. And while January 2019 is still a few months away, Skunk Anansie has made an .be">epic live video of Weak available for fans to enjoy. The video features a collage of footage from various live performances on global stages throughout the years.

The album was put together by long-time collaborator Jeremy Wheatley and is intended to take fans on a trip down memory lane while also giving listeners a true sense of being at a live concert. If Skunk Anansie’s live performances are anything to go by – with its boundless energy, grittiness and passion – 25LIVE@25 promises to be an album for the ages.

When you take Skunk Anansie’s history into consideration, the release of a live album makes perfect sense. It’s after all one of their first live performances that scored them a record deal, setting them on a path toward rock greatness.

Everything that is good that has come out of Skunk Anansie has come out of being a live band,” says drummer Mark Richardson. “We’ve always thought that nobody could defeat us. ‘Come on, try and beat us. You won’t.’ We come alive onstage,” agrees bassist Cass. “That’s where we bare our teeth.”

Longevity within the music industry has become a rare thing in recent years, with most artists fading away after a few hit singles. But Skunk Anansie has stood the test of time and, even today, their songs still resonate with those who refuse to conform. Their music still carries a strong message that crosses generations, race, gender, faith and politics – and 25LIVE@25 proves it.

Fans can pre-order 25LIVE@25 now as well as collector’s editions which include a signed deluxe CD and coloured vinyl box set which features 25LIVE@25 on cassette. You can also purchase exclusive merchandise directly from the Skunk Anansie website.
