Lindsay Lohan’s comeback single ‘Back To Me’ is brimming with enough fresh, compelling electropop energy to get you bouncing all over the dance floor.
Much has been and will be said about the actress’s foray into an already-crowded pop music scene but the power of her name alone cannot be understated. The former teen actress has an already-established fanbase and this song proves that she’s done well enough to get with the times and appeal to an entirely new generation of music lovers. This tune begins with fairly standard verses but Lohan’s backing vocals add a much-needed dose of playfulness into the proceedings. The composition really picks up in the pre-chorus segment, both in terms of the rhythm as well as the intensity of the lyrics.
But you really have to stick around until the chorus to listen to what is an irresistible and frankly exhilarating vocal breakdown. The refrain of ‘back to me’ played back in slowed-down loops over the chorus takes the track into a dynamic, synth-based space where the tempo gets just slow enough to immerse you completely into the sound. The beats come in hard and sharp, and then it’s just an intoxicating melding of sensations and emotions. It’s a stunning example of how intense some dance tracks can be — they’re as much about invoking the rawest, most instinctive reactions out of your body as they are about giving you a good beat to move to.
Although Lohan does try to stress a message of self-love borne out of cycles of regret and recovery, her vocals certainly take a back seat to the intricate production being displaced here. Credit has to be given to the songwriters — Finnish honey Alma, Chiara Hunter and producer extraordinaire Mark Ralph who’s worked with some promising British artists of this time including Years & Years, Jax Jones, and Craig David. This is LiLo’s first single in about twelve years, so crowds are going be watching with anticipation, and she’s assembled just the right crew of geniuses to help her through it. When asked what this single represents to Lohan, she said that it’s about “rediscovering and accepting oneself, shutting out the noise and moving forward and letting the past go. Living in the now.”
