Australian-based UK singer Mali-Koa has gifted us with a beautiful new single, “Some Things,” the second from her impending debut album.
After wowing us with her first single, “Dancer,” She has now lent her distinctive voice to a sweet ballad, giving us a taste of her diversity. Soft piano and gentle strings provide the backing to this heart-warming track, offering a beautifully emotive piece. The lyrics are the perfect blend of sad, yet hopeful, creating a soft and deeply relatable song.
Mali-Koa will soon release a video to accompany “Some Things,” which she filmed herself in her own home during the current coronavirus lockdowns. Speaking about the lyrics and upcoming video, she says, “This song is about all the times I’ve broken up with someone and thought, ‘I need to change my hair, reinvent myself and cut the carbs.’ I’m constantly clutching at change in the hope to feel better, especially at the end of a relationship. “Some Things” is about finally admitting that with time comes healing and change, but equally a lot of moments or feelings aren’t as easy to forget.”
Everyone can relate to this ache for reinvention following a relationship ending. That needs to push yourself forward, but always with the knowledge that some things will stay with you forever, no matter what you change or try to forget. The sweet honesty of her words will stay with you, long after listening to the track. Bursting onto the scene in 2018 with her debut single, “Honest,” it was apparent even then that we were going to be seeing great things from this artist. Since then we’ve been blessed with “Sorry,” her 2019 single, and stunning collaborations with JP Cooper and G-Eazy.
Mali-Koa’s debut album has been long awaited and highly anticipated, with her 800K-strong social media fanbase constantly yearning for more of her work. With tracks that consistently achieve high streaming numbers, her popularity continues to grow. Her vocals are understated, perfectly subtle and tailored to suit her songs. With a voice that has become instantly recognisable and showing its ability to effortlessly hold its own in tender ballads and heavier pop tracks like “Dancer,” Mali-Koa is proving herself to be a highly skilled and adaptable artist.
