20-year-old UK singer, musician and songwriter Andrew Cushin has followed up his stunning debut release of “It’s Gonna Get Better” with another compelling and beautiful track.
Entitled “Waiting for the Rain,” this new offering was inspired following him witnessing a family argument as a teenager. To escape the unrest within his home, the 15-year-old Cushin sought refuge at a friend’s house, where he revealed his distress in their garden.
The track is a masterpiece of elegant simplicity. The music focuses around the soft strumming of Cushin’s guitar and his rhythmic, soulful voice. The lyrics are gently vulnerable, speaking of the young man’s pain and hope for a better tomorrow. As you listen, you’ll be struck by his maturity and scarcely believing that he wrote this piece when he was only 15 years old.
Cushin is a sterling example of just how strong word of mouth can be. Beginning with a solid fanbase in his hometown of Newcastle, the young artist was selling out venues before he had even released his first single. His second offering has already earned over 20,000 views on social media and praise from Noel Gallagher, all without any kind of formal promotion.
His natural talent shines through his work, without any need of being overly showy or trying too hard, as so many other artists tend to do. He has truly mastered the art of subtle genius, which is no mean feat, especially for someone of his young age. The accompanying video to “Waiting for the Rain” fits the track beautifully. Mostly filmed in his local St. Peter’s Social Club, he takes to the stage in the function room to play for the reserved crowd.
Cushin does not require overproduction or flash to be great. His brilliant song writing, charismatic voice and humble guitar playing is all he needs to convey his wonderful songs and heartfelt lyrics. He is the very definition of an artist, allowing his music to speak to itself and earning himself a ton of support in the process. Support that is very well deserved.
