Review: Running Outta Love – Jacob Collier

The world has been blessed once again with another song from Jacob Collier, Straight Outta Love his fifth and final single from his upcoming album Djesse Vol. 3.
Every song the prodigy has put out for this new project has always had features from various artists from widely different backgrounds, and so does this song; with a beautiful feature from Tori Kelly, who does an absolutely beautiful job supporting Jacob’s eccentric ideas, all the while implementing her own timbre into the composition. This song has similarities with two of Jacob’s previous songs, almost seeming like a baby between Time Alone With You featuring Daniel Caesar and Feel featuring Lianne La Havas on Djesse Vol 2. Its laid-back drum-bass groove immediately brings forth Tori’s silky-smooth voice. Sprinkles of Jacob harmonies compliment her performance, but Tori Kelly truly has the spotlight here – and for a large portion of the song, too. Where features traditionally only have perhaps a verse or a bridge, this song is very split between the two, truly feeling like a collaboration between the two creatives.
This seems like Jacob’s most restrained song. Of course, there are a whole lot of crazy soundscapes of world percussions, synth blasts, multi-layered harmonies and other typical Jacob Collier gimmicks, but it feels far more open and simpler than a traditional Jacob tune. This is very welcome addition to Jacob’s sound, especially after his last few singles that are far more energetic and eccentric. This song serves as a beautiful contrast from the former, and balances the energy spread across the singles released from this album.
Another thing that is incredibly intriguing with this song is the constant use of themes and leitmotifs that almost serve as easter-eggs across his music. For example, at 2:01, a duet between Jacob and Tori can be heard singing one of the runs performed in Time Alone With You. That kind of attention to detail is what makes Jacob’s music so special, and despite this song maybe not being as exciting as All I Need, as melodic as He Won’t Hold You, as groovy as Time Alone With You or as energetic as In My Bones, this song serves a purpose just as much as the others. It almost feels like a bridge between all other singles, containing elements from each while not being too obvious about it.
Running Outta Love is a fantastic song, and will make fans of Jacob and new listeners alike excited for the album more than ever. Only a few weeks away now, I’m not quite sure the world is ready to take in all of Jacob’s genius in one delicious package titled Djesse Vol. 3.
