The ballad is a classic Demi venture — the young singer showcases her vulnerabilities whilst making room for self-empowerment and courage.
Her voice remains as supple and dynamic as ever, but the song marks yet another milestone in her journey towards achieving self-love in all its forms. The tune begins on light piano notes that indicate that the composition is going to move at a slower pace but midway through the pre-chorus, Demi comes through with some soaring vocal riffs and the song escalates to another level.
The melody is just packed with emotion but there just seems to be a feeling of emptiness in the composition. The singer has been through a train of struggles in the last couple of years so it’s only natural that she would double-down the morale-boosting trend. But there does seem to be a strange hollowness in the tune that might not connect to the listener. But otherwise, the lyrics are absolutely visceral and heartbreaking; Demi takes the listener through a harrowing journey of disappointments, insecurities, and self-loathing only to leave them in a space of optimism and hope. The song becomes all the more significant in light of recent events that have reportedly left Demi feeling a bit jaded about relationships.
There’s a silver lining to a mental and emotional breakdown — at least you have yourself. That’s the message that Demi has communicated through this number. It’s a traditional ballad in that there aren’t that many instruments except some authoritative piano chords chiming in here and there. Some notes of the gospel genre do emerge in the chorus. But if the listener zeroes in, there are slight touches of electronic synth that allow the track to take on very contemporary energy.
All in all, it’s a valiant effort from Demi, one that shows that she’s not stopping anytime on her path to self-discovery. The song itself may not be the most memorabile
