Ariana Grande demonstrates her mastery of the pop/R&B genre in her latest single ‘Positions.’ While the song is considerably less flashy than some of her previous features, it sneaks up on the listener with its earnest declarations of love and commitment.

The most memorable aspect of the composition is its interplay of instruments; from the violin strings to the trap drum to the bemused chirping of crickets, the composition will send the listener through an alluring journey of unique sounds. From the get-go, the strings will draw you into the melody, its enchanting hook making for a relaxed, soothing mood. Ariana’s vocals are perfect for this sort of R&B-infused feature: they’ve got the right amount of poise, flirtatiousness, and conviction to carry the central harmony.

Ariana’s vague, seductive enunciation also plays a major role in helping make this tune as intimate it really is. She’s able to paint a vivid scene and her sincerity shines through in every note. Ariana’s longtime fans might have hoped for a dramatic display of high notes, extended riffs, and powerhouse instruments but her light set-up works just as well in creating a dreamy, captivating affair. The singer has had a rather quiet 2020; her single ‘Stuck with U’ was one of her sole works of the year. But seeing how she has promised her fans a new album at the end of the month, fans can probably expect some over-the-top pop bangers very soon. Ultimately, the low-key nature of the ‘Positions’ as well as the stunning arrangement of the plucked guitar and violin chords. The music video features Ariana in various settings, including the White House, the kitchen, the bedroom, outlining the perfect imagery of the roles she plays as a lover.

Ariana’s sixth studio album is named after this very single and it is scheduled to be released on October 30, 2020. Some of the featured artists that have been confirmed as part of the tracklist include Doja Cat, The Weeknd, and Ty Dolla Sign. It remains to be seen what the other tunes go on to explore but it’s likely that other tracks in the album will also delve into her new relationship with Dalton Gomez.
