Review: Thomas Rhett Drops Feelgood New Single What’s Your Country Song

It’s been a heck of a year for American country singer-songwriter Thomas Rhett. In February, Rhett and his wife welcomed their third daughter into the world, and then in September, he shared the prestigious ‘Entertainer of the Year’ award with Carrie Underwood at the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards. While I’m sure Rhett hasn’t been immune to the pain and difficulties caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, he’s still had plenty to celebrate in both his personal and professional life over the last twelve months, and good for him.
His new single What’s Your Country Song captures a little bit of that feelgood mentality too. It’s essentially a tribute to music’s power to help us through good times and bad that sees Rhett reflect: “Everybody got a small town anthem / Everybody got a story to tell / Everybody got a hallelujah / Everbody been through a little hell / When you’re rolling down a little two-lane highway / And you turn your radio on / Tell me which one hits you baby / Yeah what’s your country song”.
Musically it’s a soaring, radio-friendly hit in the making, with some high-tempo guitar riffs and Rhett’s gloriously sweet vocals, which shine through particularly well in the song’s breakdown. It’s a highly polished effort and one that demonstrates Rhett’s considerable experience and talent and whets the appetite for his upcoming fifth studio album. It also owes a debt of thanks to its co-writers, Parker Welling, Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure and Rhett’s own father Rhett Akins, himself an accomplished country performer, whose own signature track That Ain’t My Truck charmingly gets namechecked in What’s Your Country Song.
Writing on his official Facebook page about the release, Rhett said: “This year has taught us all how to slow down, it’s reminded us of our roots and has shifted our perspectives. A lot has changed but a lot has come full circle for me and my music. Excited to share What’s Your Country Song – the first single off the next record – out everywhere now.”
