Born in Hampshire, but now based in London, twenty-two-year-old singer-songwriter Delilah Montagu dazzled with her In Gold EP in 2019, earning a multitude of rave reviews and mountains of online streams. A collaboration with David Guetta and Black Coffee (Drive) only added to her momentum, and she’s been roundly tipped for breakthrough success in 2021 by the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Notion and Clash.
Having already worked with a wide variety of producers including Joel Pott (George Ezra, Mabel, Shura, Jack Savoretti) and exciting new talent Barney Lister, who has worked with with Celeste and Obongjayar, Montagu released her new six-track EP This Is Not A Love Song through Columbia Records and Epic Records in the USA this week.
Montagu, who cites some of her influences as The Smiths, Bon Iver, Carole King, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, James Blake, John Mayer, Paul Simon, The Band and Joni Mitchell, explores a difficult break up on the record. The title track pulsates around a compelling minimalist beat and puts Montagu’s amazing voice front and centre, while Faultline, which examines a relationship between two adicts, is a deep, rich piano and guitar driven affair that draws you in with it’s compelling narrative. Us, meanwhile, is a slick and soulful number that rises around Montagu’s wonderful vocals.
In a press release discussing the new release, Montagu said: “The songs on this EP are about the end of a relationship. They symbolise my inner relationship with myself as well as the experiences I had with my partner. The rawness and honesty of this EP is very exposing, and it is the most openly I have ever written about my life – which makes the EP very special and close to my heart.”
