Review: Monopoly – Matt Watson

Rapper Matt Watson’s newest single is an accumulation of all of his previous ventures into one, which created his greatest song so far.
Right off the bat, the production is the best from Matt’s entire discography. The Youtuber has always expressed his desire to produce his own music, and seeing his growth lead up to this very song is extremely satisfying. The flow is very laid back, and much less melodious than what he would normally do, which is a very nice switch up. There are still melodies, all accompanied by groovy trap-drums and melancholic jazz chords played over a Fender Rhodes. The instrumentation Matt has chosen for this track is very typical of lo-fi, not that that’s a bad thing in any way. Regardless, his vocal delivery and lyrical content do more than enough to make this song extremely enjoyable.
The hook of the track is quite catchy, and matches the aesthetic of the song perfectly. To finish the song, Matt slows the tempo, lowering the key, completely instrumental. It’s a nice interlude that feels like it could segue to another song, but ultimately slows down to nothing like a record player would. The lack of lyrics makes this section especially unique, and totally out of left field for such a song. It’s a quite a masterful way to end the song, truth be told.
Matt really manages to grow his musical vision with every release at an exponential rate. You can hear the hard work that the artist has put over the last year. Every project he’s put out is of great quality, but this song really is his greatest work so far. The production, the tone, the delivery, and the switch-up all make for a wonderful lo-fi song with its own unique presence in the genre.
