It’s the year for Lizzy McAlpine – with a new album underway and an upcoming performance on the Ellen DeGeneres show. On top of all that, the artist released a brand-new single in anticipation for the aforementioned album, ‘Five Seconds Flat’, titled ‘All My Ghosts’.

First and foremost, the very first thing you’ll hear from the tune will be somewhat new for people already familiar with Lizzy’s music. The chord progression is played with an electric, overdriven guitar, foreshadowing the energy of the second verse and onwards. The verse is very comfortable, with the classic intimacy Lizzy so easily displays. After the first verse, a groovy alt-sounding riff starts playing, sounding like a song from the 80s with any of the production gimmicks. The song trades the usual complex chord and changes for something irresistibly catchy. The lag on the punches for the chorus are what will really hook the listeners. It’s some of the tastiest rhythms I’ve heard in a while, and the contrast of going from such an energetic buildup and middle-of-song, to the soft, floaty outro is a feat in of itself. The juggling of themes and sounds is difficult to pull off, but it’s no surprise that Lizzy could pull that off. After such a wonderful outing with her last album, ‘Give me a Minute’, I genuinely wondered where she would take her music next. ‘All My Ghosts’ is both an evolution of her previous achievements and sounds, but also a huge leap forward into new, uncharted territories for the musician.

‘All My Ghosts’ isn’t just a killer preview for Lizzy McAlpine’s upcoming album, it’s a song that’s already bound to be one of the catchiest, infectious singles of 2022, already in January. Especially with the chorus that will make the most stubborn ones get up on their feet and dance around, ‘All My Ghosts’ is probably one of Lizzy McAlpine’s greatest work. Previously, I had said something similar with all of her newest releases, which just promises ‘Five Seconds Flat’ to be especially wonderful.
