Mixing modern pop elements with rock songwriting and instrumentation, bülow crafts the perfect brew with her newest single ‘Don’t Break His Heart’.
Rock is back in style amongst pop artists, especially thanks to artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Travis Barker bringing the sounds into the realm of pop and hip hop. ‘Don’t Break His Heart’ is much more explicitly rock than your average modern pop-rock tune, but there are still many elements that are quite obviously from pop standards, such as the electric production and the dance-feel to the overall song. Everything else, however, is very rock and roll. The electric guitars, the natural drum sound, and even the composition of ‘Don’t Break his Heart’. The descending chord progression is reminiscent of 70s rock such as Led Zeppelin. The way the melodies have a sort of attitude, traversing through all the chords, is really a rock staple that bülow absolutely nails in ‘Don’t Break His Heart’. The dynamics of the song are quite unique, too. Bülow’s soft vocal performance is a drastic contrast to the instrumentation, which gives the song a very particular kind of energy. It’s not the kind of energy that’ll necessarily fuel a crowd to go absolutely insane, though it definitely has the potential for it, but it's more so the kind of energy you get when you jump around, singing in your own room to your favorite tunes. It’s dynamic and energetic, but very intimately. The structure is also worth noting, as every part flows wonderfully from part-to-part, following a somewhat standard structure albeit with very differing dynamics between each section. Even the difference between the verses and chorus is quite drastic, and bülow pulls it off without a sweat.
‘Don’t Break His Heart’ is a very fun song, and a nice, modern take on rock music. It’s a progression of both rock and pop music that is heading towards the right direction, and bülow make one hell of a track in these genres’ journeys.
