Review: Higher Michael Bublé

Mixing the instrumentation of classic vocal jazz with the excitement of anthem pop, Michael Bublé takes to new levels with his third single from his upcoming album, ‘Higher’.

The song introduces itself in the most appropriate fashion: as dramatically as the rest of the track. It takes no time to swell into the epic nature of the track; it simply jumps right into the thick piano-and-drum groove, accented by an angry string section. Michael’s voice here is loud and gritty, almost aggressive. With a descending, almost creepy chord progression, it accentuates the sort of mystical nature of the verse. The bridge is far more ethereal, with gliding strings and more floaty melodies. The second verse introduces itself the same as the first that opened the song, with a very different second half where Michael gets even closer to the mic and the instrumentation grows far punchier, making it sound even more unnerving. The bridge in contrast highlights both sections so drastically. The third section after the second chorus is extremely theatrical, sounding straight off a Broadway track with an ending high note. The chorus is then reintroduced, ending the song at the ultimate climax of the song with every instrument that was previously brought in coming together. Once Michael is done singing, the orchestral punches play through the main riff of the song one final time, bringing the song to an end after just a little over three minutes.

‘Higher’ is a total shift of tone for Michael Bublé. Some might find it a bit off putting because of its aggressive nature, and almost metal approach to this type of music Michael has essentially branded, but for those with an open ear and heart, ‘Higher’ is a true staple of the man’s talents. The three singles he’s released so far are so drastically different, and ‘Higher’ is very different from anything else anyone, let alone himself, has ever done. It’s an intriguing, and masterfully done song.
