Review: Eyes Don’t Lie – Tones and I

Tones and I does it again, with another incredibly groovy single that brings all kinds of surprises, titled ‘Eyes Don’t Lie’.
‘Eyes Don’t Lie’ is an experience, from the moment it starts to the end. It can almost be separated into individual parts in the way each section brings so many new flavors to the table. When the song starts, the four-on-the-floor drum groove punching over the acoustic guitar strummed section brings an interesting contrast, since the acoustic guitar isn’t traditionally used for dance tracks. Still, the contrast works wonderfully, giving this folk-dance feel to it, especially with Tones and I’s vocal delivery. There’s an alternative twang to the way she sings, with already an edgier twist that compliments the drums. The drums drop all the instruments except for a few sounds that punch the chord progression, which is a descending harmonic minor movement sung by an eerie choir. The chorus continues to build upon it, after the belted notes from Tones and I, raising the energy tenfold. The bass grooves much harder here, and the already-groovy feel of the verse grows even catchier. The second verse takes many elements that had been built before, bringing it forward into the second chorus that heightens the energy even more. In a final twist by the end, the song takes a total turn to trap drums. Though the bridge section is incredibly welcomed, predicting its arrival is absolutely impossible. The pre-chorus, and its following section then brings the song to a close to complete the song full-circle.
‘Eyes Don’t Lie’ is an incredible song that brings so many different flavors in a single track. It’s hard to predict, and addictingly catchy. Tones and I did a wonderful job crafting a dance track that manages to stand on its own without being overly repetitive, despite its repetitions, all the while riding on beautiful melodies that are sure to get stuck in your head for days to come.
