As a music reviewer, I never thought I'd find myself discussing Twin Peaks in the middle of an article—my favorite television series of all time—within the context of a music review. Yet here we are.
On August 2nd, Chrystabell and David Lynch released an album that is as ethereal and surreal as the series itself. Chrystabell is known not only for her hauntingly beautiful voice but also for her role as FBI agent Tammy Preston in Twin Peaks' third season. And, needless to say, the experimental musician David Lynch is the famous creator and director of that marvelous show.
The album isn't just music; it's a mood, an atmosphere that mirrors the ominous, dreamlike quality of Lynch’s cinematic world. Almost every track follows some kind of hidden rules and patterns, the most recognizable being the overuse of long, sustained chords played by synth-string pads. Over these chords, the voices of Lynch and Chrystabell are layered in intricate ways that resemble clouds of voices rather than harmonized melodies. The voices weave in and out of each other, their identities sometimes indistinguishable, blurring the line between entities.
Some tracks step out just a little from these compositional rules. “Answer to the Questions,” for example, adds a touch of solidity with its rock rhythm and electric guitar, but even here, the voices remain at the forefront, shaping the music into something intangible and deeply atmospheric.
This album is a continuation of Lynch's exploration of the blurred boundaries between sound and vision, between reality and dream—perfect for fans of Twin Peaks and lovers of the surreal. At the same time, Chrystabell adds a lot to the table, showcasing her production expertise, beautiful voice, and exemplary taste in counterpoint.
David Lynch is already a well-established artist, composer, and film director. However, if you’d like, you can support the talented artist Chrysta Bell and learn more about her on her official website.
