Review: Amber Mark’s ‘Wait So Yeah’: Effortless Sophistication in Modern R&B

Amber Mark has recently dropped a new banger titled “Wait So Yeah.” My personal favorite by Amber Mark has always been her cover of Sade's iconic track, “Love Is Stronger Than Pride.” Before hearing “Wait So Yeah,” that was pretty much the only song I had listened to thoroughly by her. With this in mind, I didn’t quite know what to expect.
Modern R&B artists often fall across a broad spectrum. On one side, some embrace acoustic instruments and classic soul/R&B chord progressions. On the other, many lean into futuristic sounds, incorporating drum machines and experimental production. Of course, it’s not as black-and-white as this; there’s a vast range between the two. What’s exciting is how wide the spectrum of what is accepted in modern soul/R&B has become.
In “Wait So Yeah,” Amber Mark flows effortlessly over heavy trap drums, sampled vocals, and a soaring synth line. It’s a song that could easily have ended up feeling generic—a forgettable track among many if the wrong samples, vocals, or drum sounds were chosen. But instead, Amber manages to deliver a production bursting with character and style. Crafting a beat like this is one thing; making it sound this compelling is a rare feat.
Amber Mark, an American artist born in Summertown, Tennessee, likely draws inspiration from R&B, soul, and blues traditions. While people often obsess over pinpointing what inspires an artist to create a particular song, creativity often isn’t that simple. Many artists aren’t driven by a single song or artist; inspiration is a layered and complex process.
This track is sexy, laid-back, and chill—perfect for any playlist with that vibe. While some listeners may hesitate with trap-driven production, “Wait So Yeah” is a masterclass in how to make intricate music feel effortless. It’s deceptively simple, showing that what seems easy often requires incredible skill to pull off.
Give it at least one spin—you won’t regret it!
