Calvin Harris, the mastermind behind some of our favorite EDM anthems, is back with a new track, “SMOKE THE PAIN AWAY.” Right from the start, it’s impossible to predict where this song will go—has Harris pivoted to acoustic folk? Let’s find out.
The track builds beautifully, offering a perfect blend for those who enjoy both acoustic folk and laid-back EDM. Then comes the drop—unexpected but seamless—featuring a well-mixed drum beat, what sounds like a Moog bassline, and delicate flutes in the background. One of the standout instruments is something I’d rather keep a secret until you hear it yourself. Let’s just say it rhymes with "Veronica" and fits effortlessly into the folk-inspired sound. The choice to incorporate it is bold, and personally, I love it.
Despite its melancholic theme, the song radiates a certain warmth from the very first note. It’s hard to say exactly what Harris intends with this contrast—perhaps it means nothing at all, or perhaps it’s a quiet reassurance that "everything will be okay."
Lyrically, the song keeps things simple, telling a straightforward yet emotionally resonant story. As for its place in a DJ set, I can picture it being played when the crowd needs a breather—there’s no overpowering drop or attention-grabbing elements. Instead, it’s the kind of track that could effortlessly blend into café playlists, shopping center soundtracks, or any setting that calls for background music with a subtle emotional lift. And I mean that in the best way possible—this song has the rare ability to go unnoticed while still making people feel better.
