While fans await the release of their upcoming album Double Infinity, Big Thief has offered a taste of what’s to come with a new single titled “Incomprehensible.” As someone who’s spent a lot of time immersed in Big Thief’s music, I’m always struck by their ability to evoke nostalgia for songs I’ve never heard before. Their sound choices consistently blend into a melancholic, beautiful soundscape that feels both timeless and freshly personal.

The album cover for Double Infinity hints at a thematic exploration of existence, mathematics, and perhaps even science fiction. Whatever the direction, I trust Big Thief to take us somewhere emotionally rich and sonically adventurous.

“Incomprehensible” feels cold—like a chilly winter breeze brushing past your skin. It’s subtle but evocative, convincing in the mood it sets. The mix is sparse and airy. There are no heavy, “in-your-face” drums or basslines. Instead, the percussion feels distant, as if the drummer is gliding away on Santa’s sleigh through a snowy landscape, growing fainter with each passing moment.

At the center of it all is Adrianne Lenker, who I believe is one of the most significant traditional songwriters of our time. She leads Big Thief while also maintaining a remarkable solo career. Her lyrics, melodies, and arrangements are consistently captivating. While her voice may not stand out in a conventional sense, it always lands exactly where it needs to. It’s a grounding force in music that often floats.

Compared to their earlier work, this track feels like a departure in terms of production and sonic texture. It’s exciting to hear Big Thief experimenting while still holding onto the emotional core that defines their music. As a teaser, “Incomprehensible” is compelling—and it leaves me curious about the evolution of their sound on the rest of the album.

Until Double Infinity arrives, give “Incomprehensible” a listen. It's a beautiful, haunting preview of what’s likely to be another unforgettable journey.
