Simon Cowell has defended reality TV saying that there is still a place for it despite the declining number of viewers who watched the last series of the X Factor.

He claims that reality TV shows will be along for quite some time yet if he has anything to do with it.

He spoke out to BBC Newsbeat saying:"For bad shows it's dead, definitely. You've seen with something like the Olympics, when you put something good on, people watchl  it."

He also spoke out about the X Factor's low ratings saying: "You've just got to try and make a better show than you did the year before. And if you do that there's a chance you can get the numbers up.

"I never go into anything thinking the numbers are going to go down, because the first thing I say to our production team is you've got to make a better show than last year."

He confirmed int he interview that despite its low ratings, he wouldn't be taking the X Factor off air any time soon.

"I guess there will be conversations then. It will be on TVl  for a long time to come. Both shows will," he said, adding, "but I want to get this year out of the way first before I think about anything else."

Cowell is currently busy filming for this yar's Britain's Got Talent.
