Spice Girl Melanie C had to be dramatically rescued from a crocodile infested river as an African Comic Relief challenge went wrong this week.

As part of the challenge to raise money for Red Nose Day, she was embarking on a 68 mile journey down the River Zambezi before horror struck and the challenge turned out to be more dangerous than was first thought.

Mel was riding in a dinghy along with comedian Jack Dee at the time before the river’s became too strong for them and they capsized.

Comic Relief updated followers of the events through their official Twitter account saying: "Jack and Mel lost control of their dinghy, were dragged through trees by the white water & capsized before being rescued."

"Everyone is safe and well, but the last two hours have been incredibly dramatic. Everyone is shaken but physically fine now - but that was as frightening a morning as you'd ever want to have."

There are many other famous names taking place in the challenge alongside Mel and Jack including comedian Dara O’Briain, Radio 1 DJ Greg James and Athlete Phillips Idowu.

Many other, slightly less dangerous challenges will be taking place in aid of the charity including Jessie J shaving her head so that she will be completely bald.
