X Factor insiders have been hinting that there could be some radical changes to the current voting system for the 2013 series allowing viewers to vote through Twitter.

Producers of the show have been wracking there brains to come up with ideas to freshen up the next series after the show has been accused of becoming stale, and they think that a free voting system through Twitter could be the answer.

An insider told The Sun: "Twitter explodes when The X Factor is on so it makes sense to see if this can be harnessed for voting.

“But, obviously, there is currently no way of charging for this so that could create a problem.”

If this change to the voting system were to be implemented, it would mean that all fans would have to do would be to follow @TheXFactor which would then follow them back and send a direct message to followers every week asking who they want to remain in the competition.

Producers are hoping that a free option will increase the number of voters which has been steadily declining for some time.

The use of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook is already rife in the US but represents a problem in the form of loss in revenue from phone voting.

The show insider continued to say: "Twitter voting may well work in America but there are a lot of obstacles to stopping it from being a realistic proposition in the UK.”
